Elbow pain is one of those sneaky things that can come from a lot of different places. The most common causes usually fall into a few buckets: Overuse & strain (very common) Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) – pain on the outside of the elbow, often from gripping, lifting, typing, or repetitive wrist motions (you don’t have to play tennis). Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) – pain on the inside of the elbow, linked to repetitive bending or gripping. Tendonitis – irritated or inflamed tendons from repeated stress. Nerve-related issues Cubital tunnel syndrome – compression of the ulnar nerve; causes pain, tingling, or numbness in the ring and pinky fingers. Referred nerve pain – issues from the neck, shoulder, or wrist can show up as elbow pain. Joint & structural problems Arthritis – wear-and-tear (osteoarthritis) or inflammatory types like rheumatoid arthritis. Bursitis – inflammation of the fluid-filled sac at the back of the elbow (often swelling + tenderness). Joint stiffness or cartilage damage – especially after injury. Injuries Sprains or strains – overstretching ligaments or muscles. Fractures or dislocations – usually after a fall or direct hit. Microtears – small tendon or muscle tears from repetitive use. Other causes Infection – rare, but possible if there’s redness, warmth, fever, or severe swelling. Poor ergonomics – desk setup, mouse/keyboard use, or sleeping positions. Systemic conditions – gout, autoimmune disease, or nerve disorders.
